Helix is that dude with All Caps & Night Slugs 12″s out this apocalyptic 2012 which places him in unique position to quietly influence the best djs this year; just before the oceans evaporate forever… and so what’s he offering? Well he’s upping the tempo on all this pussy compressed laptop techno and trying to bring back something raw uncut with clattering, black-pepper drum programming that feels authentic. He builds music for 1AM and 4AM with equal weight – even his deeper, understated moments swing on long tape saturated pads. And with this tape for us, which could of easily just been a tribute to OJ Da Juiceman, he sorta surprised us with this perfect night drive soundtrack of rapid & classic techno that warrants bouncing to cassette just for the extra dose of fuzz as the planet moves slowly closer to the sun. 13.12.11 – RBMA Culture Clash 2011

This night is a haze. A battle of 4 crews over 4 stages in an amphitheatre in Toronto on a warm September night. Part of the RBMA series of Culture Clashes we called upon Just Blaze, Hud Mo, Lunice & Rustie to hold us down. Up until the last round – we had it in the bag. We underdogs were kinda doing better than we expected considering Mad Decent brought a troop of 6 dancers and skerrit boy in elvis costume with lasers shooting from his wrists (I’m not joking). But in the final round the home team, Toronto Allstars took it – quite rightfully so in a year that Toronto hip hop defined itself at the top of the game. We held our own though. If we had to loose to anyone, glad it was them.

01.08.11    -      We Major

There’s a lot of new content to play catch up on now that we’ve got our site back. We were gonna keep the site down until everything was in place but we kept getting mail asking us for mixtapes etc. And then last week we had Ben UFO play our Edinburgh party and we all went for dinner at this legendary dim sum spot at Haymarket and I got a fortune cookie that said “Continous improvement is better than delayed perfection – Mark Twain” so I came home and emailed our programmer at 5 in the morning all drunk saying let’s just get the site live and make tweaks when we can. We’re just so busy doing the more important business of releasing records and playing shows. You know what’s next right? We got what’s probably our biggest party of the year – the Edinburgh Festival Party in Edinburgh on Friday 12th August with Rustie, Machinedrum, Nick Hook from Cubic Zirconia, The Blessings, Eclair Fifi, Nightwave, Bamboo Palace, Dema, Respite, Claude Speeed from American Men, All Caps, Local Action Records showcase with Tom Lea and Damu, 7VWWVW & KONX OM PAX all playing. Last Summer Om Unit took off round the country driving the full span of the British Isles reaching the farthest Northern point of the mainland in an incredible RV he’d hand-reared, full of food cans and equipment for making music. We’d spoken briefly online and shown mutual respect for each other on Ustream chat rooms but it was one of the rare moments that virtual friends become real friends when the guy just called us to say he was about half an hour away from our studio. We were playing in this tiny bar called Bramble that night and ended up all going up to this girls house-party afterwards where an only-in-edinburgh crop of trustafarians tried to hustle us chemical drugs, dancing with their breasts out, and electrocute us with a broken camera flash. I mean, it was a pretty weird and debased night for Om Unit to just sorta be there along for the ride – but it was natural. Instant family you know. You just click with some people. I think this is written all over this website – but music is one of the greatest ways to meet people – especially this weird shit we make – cause if you get that you can presume so much familiarity with each other. This tape, and in fact all these tapes, say more about the actual person than you might at first think. Enjoy.

But its mutation is so fast that this international crop of first and second generation producers are giving this true battle music there own context entirely; away from community halls in the Chi. For now this new Footwork makes more sense in European clubs if you drop it after real detroit booty and a handful of big pop hop. 8Bitch is no fool to the format – making one of the tightest & complete mixes one could ever ask of this hybrid urban club music. It doesn’t drop a single beat, staying rigidly quantised with expertly pasted acapellos that’ll make you ponder the sounds of fairground music after the mayan apocalypse.

Happy New Year Ery’body. I’d like to think the photo of Wrong Island’s ‘Teamy’ above is taken in New York  after we bumped into each other in the old Knitting Factories last ever Sunn0)))) concert. The fact that I’d even just happen to meet this guy on the other side of the world at an auspicious gig like that explains why we had to get a mix from them. Wrong Island is a Glasgow institution that, should you ever be in town, you should see first hand. It’s one of those nights with a rare energy somewhere between cool, unpretentious, camp & messy. You know, after 2AM at Wrong Island every single song is an anthem. The music policy takes it over 4 decades of the cool shit but without the usual compromise of what’s hot and current. I mean the best of Funky and everything post-dubstep sat on top of HI NRG is no bad thing at all in my eyes. Smarter than your usual club mix by 3 miles, this is perfect for today.

Mooken was the first guy to ever put on Hudson Mohawke in Manchester in 2008. We drove down together with the founder of Firecracker Records to see Moodyman play (behind the curtain) and I’ll never forget waking up round Mooken’s place, hung over and groggy to pour over this enormous collection of prog, space disco & Drexciya piled up beside the makeshift bed in our room. It’s been a reality of making music that we have made friends who we met early which have continued to grow in profile through the record industry. So it was great to see Mooken hold down the other Sonar stage at the same time as us in 2010, playing directly after Matthew Herbert. Funny to think of the same dude that was so nice to us back then, sharing his house and last slice of toast with us now watching Herbert from the wings of the stage in Barcelona.

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before but we put out a record called Cool World in July 2010. It’s an electronic vision of rock music by our friends American Men. We added a remix disk with work by Falty DL, Optimum & Ikonika, Machinedrum & Hudson Mohawke and hence put out our first gatefold double vinyl. It’s probably the most satisfied we’ve been as a bunch of guys making records, that we made a complete project. And if you’ve ever been lucky enough to catch the full band live you will be as hooked as we were, many moons ago when Claude Speed showed me their myspace page. And so kick back and enjoy Claude’s own heady mix of golden era electronica and drone-pulled corporate rock: a mission statement for the year ahead.

Andrew Gordon Mcpherson aka ANGO delivers one of the most satisfying RnB selections of the year, just sneaking-her-in for the final week. This tape is all smiles. Can’t wait to hear what 2011 holds for him as he gears up with a debut record and very likely a host of other releases and remixes with fellow labels. Keep an eye on ANGO, cause his electronic soul music tinged with hip hop, house and disco might well offer an overdue alternative to the reverb’d swathes of melancholy that defined 2010.

But he was soon to tour abroad and so 24 hours later this tape landed in our inbox. A masterstroke by Untold, of post punk and hardcore stompers you maybe didn’t expect if you didn’t know how clever and eclectic this real producer is. Not just because it was the first tape we got back, but because it is one of the very best we have ever brought to you – we are proud to kick off our new mixtape series and site with this tape. In 2010, with the release of Many Faces on LuckyMe, Machinedrum stepped from his place at the heart of Neu New York Hip Hop and RnB to take his place in at the heart of new UK/EU electronic music. After years of the most reputable beat production fused he was very influential to us here. But with his records on LuckyMe, Planet Mu & Hot Flush he’s now better known for this dubstep, techno and house hybrids which sound like they’ve been dragged into the teleporter from The Fly movies. HIs unique sense of melody and texture power the emotion of his music – but this tape here shows a bright bombastic love of old school electro, hip hop, stadium rock and boogie. No one expected it but fuck, aren’t you hearing what I’m saying. Machinedrum’s gonna mutate on us.

If you don’t know about Konx Om Pax’s home label Display Copy, you should. Some of the most discerning home for his releases, video and print indulgence since, well, here. But if you thought we were weird, wait til you hear Tom. He is the twisted mind behind sleeves and videos for all our friends and he’s one of the moodiest & friendliest people we know. We got made love for Tom. This is a funny tape though. It’s like he’s gone aw fuckit, i’ll dj like those normal djs for once! Like he’s been itching to put more krautrock spanners in the works the entire time. What he accidentally did here is make an excellent summary of trad-hits and this summers anthems. It ticks along satisfyingly, but gets really good when Tom can’t help himself fuck up the dance with granular synthesis.

Alilloyd from American Men didn’t make this for the site or anything. He just posted it to our private forum where we all swap music and talk about world affairs (read R&B Gossip) . We all just loved it cause this summer it’s been a lot of shows. Lot of clubs. Maybe not as much sun as we might of deserved. And so in the eternal hunt for new music to play out we slept on the Emeralds LP and a lot more of Ali’s choices. A shot of pure Vitamin D in the ear.

Is it obvious to say one of our favourite labels was Italian’s Do it Better. Actually, maybe it’s not obvious. Like sometimes people send us demos saying things like: “My music is like Mancuso mixed with Caribou” and then you get a patronising link to Wikepedia references. We don;t listen to a lot of Bass Music here. Please. Trust me. Back in the day when we listened to hip hop A LOT, and a beat on the Nas album would sound like a beat on the Can Ox record from the year before and people would be like ” it’s just coincidence”. I think we always had the opinion that the world of music is small. That it’s totally feasible that the overground is influenced by the underground. And that a label like LuckyMe, known for it’s blend of electronic music and hip hop could be deeply enthused about the world of Italo and Rock. Pan-genre in itself this tape from Premier Rang is an inspiring mix that we’re really proud to host. It’s far more in keeping with the idea of this series than a current club mix.

We called in Eclair & Fine Art late last night and asked if they’d be up for a live mix – no retakes. A one-shot back 2 back pass as a special Sonar Mixtape. Packed full of exclusives from the label roster and our super friends, alongside some straight-up Summer jams for the year. No biggie. It as rough as a good live tape should be with levels all over the place but we think it sounds like we had fun making it. Aight so, here comes the sun everyone. Max Dunbar once said of Respite’s song ‘Girls_Suitcases’ ” AMAZING…. it’s post everything.” What we have here is not a concept tape. It’s a ‘shit I’m feeling right now’ tape meaning the ubiquitous ‘want me’ makes an appearance, butted up against some shimmering rnb. It’s dope. A perfect example of LM in the ’10.

72. James Pants – A Horrible Fancy Tale

When Mo came back from his US Tour there was this weird looking dude living in his flat, eating from his fridge… James Fuckin’ Pants. Not the sorta shit that happens everyday. Or actually, for Mo this is exactly the sorta shit that happens everyday. James is one of our very favourite artists round here cause no one lets more of their character blossom out through their selection of music. It’s all in there: The humour. The outsider. The understated cool. The darned unashamed-ness. Even this weird flirtation with the macabre. Mannn, Pants truly loves the desperate and obscure. Not RARE. I said obscure. Those things that are seldom seen, heard or given any value. I’ve seen James play many times now and I remember he’d play some shit that I have never given a second to before – like Barry White records and, on this tape the Sabbath joint that kicks it off. Don’t get me wrong, I love these artists but when he put his hands to them they became something else. See, he’s drawing from this whole shitty chain of undervalued and unwanted music and he’s bringing them back into our modern context to say something about what it all means side by side. What does it say about man that we made all this horrible and beautiful sounds in our recorded history of 100 years? He’s making narratives out of minute morsels of new age music, kraut, punk, rock, rap & techno to string out this story. What you’re left with is the mixtape equivalent of the ride from the beginning of dungeons and dragons. You strap-in for 34 minutes and you pop out the other end of this horribly fancy tale sorta feeling woozy, dragged through a 1000 lost exotic places.

Darrell aka Bamboo Palace used to share a flat with Hud Mo a couple years back and I’d head round to make music and next door dude was sat on his stolen office chair churning out immaculate heavy Garage and (forgive us) Bassline influenced edits. Native to Glasgow he’s been friends to Numbers and Fortified for years but it was over this period with Mo that we got to hearing more and more of this guys music and we became good friends. Well, Darrell’s got a better chair now. A better flat. He’s got a literal tonne of 80′s synth soul, pop, booty, early west coast electro & gangster rap and he goes to Miami once a year to collect vinyl and cuban sandwiches. One of the most prolific producers in our stable turning out dj tools and producing a new live band project – you should know that all our crew are safe-hands. All come up with the goods.

So, Bristol is nuts eh? Hyetal is yet another example of forward thinking electronic music coming out of the city. His music is beautifully stripped back which reeks of 80s Prince influences and 90s FM. Last year we were working loooong into the night on the Mary Anne Hobbs visuals for Wild Angels. The girl saying fuck you in the attached photo was the star of the viral film, and together with Konx Om Pax we created a huge set on these derelict tramlines on Southside Glasgow dressed up like wolves and druids. We played the soundtrack to the film as we shot, and every time Hyetal’s ‘We Should Light A Fire’ came round it was like the whole dusk just sank into a syrup. Jo was creeped out but sorta enjoyed it.

69. Kingdom – April Fools Gold Part 2 Mixtape

Back when myspace was really fucking exciting Eclair Fifi added a then ‘DJ Ezra aka KINGDOM’ who we bugged for his flip of Bustas ‘Eyes Can See’. We made some swaps and stayed in touch and when we toured the US in late 08 Kingdom came down and we finally met in person right before we blew up the amp in Nu Blu NYC. Jump forward to April 2010 and Kingdom is down with our peoples at Night Slugs (THE TRUTH!!!!) and has put out his first cerftified anthem in the form of his debut 12″ – Mindreader ft Shyvonne (Fools Gold Records). With two European tours in 4 months, Miami Winter Music, SXSW, tours of OZ and Radio One shine – man it’s looking like this is gonna be the year that Kingdom gets what he’s due. His sensibility is perfect. Back in February we played this show for Last.Fm at Cargo which wrapped up about 4 and then we slogged up to the Egg at Kings Cross for the Night Slugs label launch. By the time we got there the smoke was thick in the air and the crowd were grindin on each other. The booth was a who’s-who of shit we’re excited about right now: Bok Bok, L Vis, Mosca, Greena, Jam City, Ikonika, and Manara on the mic. Then this dancing shape from out the smoke takes to the booth and it’s Kingdom, banging out thousands of snare drums on CD-R. My memory of that night is buckafast-hazey but just in terms of vibe, Kingdom was the most satisfyingly ‘on my own shit’ DJ I’ve seen in ages. Every success this year Killa. Thank you for the mix.

Max Dunbar runs the excellllllent Future Times Records and as well as solo production and DJing contributes to his group Beautiful Swimmers who we absolutely fuck with. It’s just a beautiful thing to find guys all over the world who are so likeminded. If I was to copy paste our intro emails they would read like a ping pong of youtubes from two rap / new jack nerds who grew up just enough to get into dance music. What is that exactly what we are? So Max worked on this mix over a couple months and it shows. We at LuckyMe really love all these mixes equally as if they were our children or pets, but they seems to have all just upped the anti on each other these last few months. 67. JD Twitch – Optimo Espacio RIP

If there has been any single great influence on Glasgow’s musical reputation it has been the impeccable attitude and style of Optimo Espacio’s JD Twitch and Jonny Wilkes. If ever there was one, Sundays at the Subclub have been a complete institution of clubbing in Glasgow for the last 12 years- scaring off any competition. Whole venues would sooner close on Sundays than compete with Optimo. It was that serious. When I started at Glasgow School of Art there was no department that would put on a Monday morning lecture in acknowledgment that the attendance would be weak. Mondays were a ghost town on Renfrew Street. Can you imagine a club where dub turned techno turned hip hop turned electro turned rock turned punk turned techno. And the hand type-set flyers and the girls and the ‘we love your ears’ neon lighting. Man, these guys just knew myth building better than anyone. I once heard someone mutter that Twitch’s only rule in music was that he hated sax and would never play a record which included the instrument, but of course it was bullshit – I just ate up and believed it. I’d go down, and Hud Mo would be working the bar and Nadsroic would be working the bar and the whole time you’d be making these lists of songs in your head: what they played and how the fuck they took you on such a ride from here to there in three records and live 808s and effects. I mean, Optimo remain the absolute gold standard for us. A huge influence on LuckyMe and their Sunday night shows will be missed. This beautiful little acknowledgement by Twitch is an honour.

Last year we April Fooled about having a Fools Gold tape, and this year it just sorta happened naturally. Nick mailed us out the blue a while back looking for Rustie’s Neko joint and a couple weeks later Mo & I were standing in SXSW in Austin in mother fucking shorts, eating nachos and watching Nick blast out his Drake edit. Nick’s so effortless with this shit, spanning so much in the 45 minutes it’s impossible to deny Fools Gold as one of the leading dance music labels in the States. But what we particularly love is there continuing association with Hip Hop with that Danny Brown XXX leak.

Lukid is part of Werk Discs. He’s one of our favourites. He understands subtlety. Hearing this tape is like walking down a slow decline. You start on a light stroll but end up heavily stomping. On receiving this we put it on and thought it would be a nice alternative to Catchdubs club mix, but it just builds momentum effortlessly creeping up into deep 125 territory. I need to a acknowledge I only gave this mix the title ‘Don’t Luke, Now’ cause I knew he’d hate it.

Legends tend to get pissed off with their own back-story. Sorry John. This lil blurb is for those of us who are naive to John’s legacy in Glasgow band and the culture of local/not local music. In 94 John formed indy pop band Bis and famously appeared on TOTP without a record deal (shit I remember watching that particular show. What a trip. Sugar Sugar was my jammy-jam). In time Bis signed with Chemikal Underground, K Records and even the Beastie Boy’s Grand Royal. Their song was used as closing theme on the powerpuff girls and if anyone we know gets to say this shit as fact, it’s John… “I’m BIG in Japan.” Bis sold 100,000 units in one week on the release of their debut in Asia. Since these crazy days John has been a constant innovator working as a DJ in Dirty Hospital and playing in ska band Amphetameanies with a couple of Belle & Sebastian’s. John also works the boards as a prolific producer for the likes of Franz Ferdinand, Fangs, Linus Loves and Mylo. Okay, this is turning into a wikepedia page so let me conclude by saying that in our lifetime and in the current culture of music in 2000&when, we couldn’t hope to do what this guy has done for our home town on the international stage. We commend you John Disco.

Ben Thomson aka Ben UFO is one of the chiefs of the excellent Hessle Audio. But you know that. And you know what to expect on this tape – seamless mixing from one the best out. The scene is so vibrant right now. WIth a new-found freedom to draw from anywhere in the last twenty years of dance and urban music, its made for a culture of producers and djs who don’t hold back on any fusion. Nothing is corny.
